Jay identifies as a redneck living in the “big city”. Although he grew up on Staten Island, Jay got sober in Brooklyn, and his sober journey has taken him all over. He served 3 1/2 years in the military before getting kicked out. He was deployed to Camp Diamondback in 2007, doing recon and combat missions, and was in Afghanistan for 6 months in 2006 doing a prison detail at Kandahar Airfield. His served time was all with 1/94 FA, 1st Armored Division out of Germany, which was his main base.
Jay talks about being an alcoholic, how he couldn’t stop drinking especially towards the bitter end as his addiction held him captive in other habits, such as gambling, sex, and being an adrenaline junkie.
Jay got sober on April 30th, 2016. He believes in trying to follow a program, a certain way of life, as he claims, “I need to, because I suck at life”. Getting sober has perfectly designed a way of life, but sometimes still struggles with how he well he uses it.
